Growing the Next Generation of Music Leaders This summer, Yorkshire Youth and Music has been proud to support two trainee creative musicians, Lucy Davey and Morgan Thomas, as part of our Trainee Programme. The scheme is designed to give emerging practitioners hands-on experience across different projects, while learning from our team of experienced music leaders. Lucy has been working in our safe space studio, observing one-to-one sessions with young people and developing her music production skills. She’s also supported our work on the mother-and-baby ward at New Hall prison. Reflecting on her experience, Lucy says: “I have absolutely loved being a trainee creative musician with YY&M. These sessions have been some of the highlights of my summer and I have learnt so much about structuring engaging sessions and encouraging mother-baby interaction. Overall, I’ve just had the best time training with YY&M and have learnt so many new skills that I am excited to apply to future work.” Morgan’s traineeship has focused on leading groups and engaging young people through music in the settings they’re most passionate about — from DJing to working with drum kit and piano. Alongside this, Morgan has been exploring how to adapt their practice for different contexts, including youth justice and SEND. “Through my traineeship I have worked toward running groups and sessions with young people, learning how to get them involved in music whilst learning new skills myself. Finally, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with YY&M and hope to continue this and my personal progress with mentors in the future.” Both Lucy and Morgan have brought enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to learn, and we are excited to see where their journeys take them next. Programmes like this are an important part of how YY&M grows the next generation of music leaders, ensuring that more young people across Yorkshire can access inspiring, safe and meaningful opportunities through music.
