Our theme for this latest of Sounds like... playlists is the colour RED.

Red is a primary colour on the visible spectrum, with a wavelength of between 625 and 740 nanometres. Red is an evocative colour and whilst it is most associated with love, passion, blood, warning and danger (and a certain UK political party), it is also the colour most frequently used to represent anger, where people who are feeling rage and resentment are said to literally "see red". It is most likely for these reasons that the colour red features heavily in music... and this, of course, brings us to our first colour themed playlist, aptly starting with this vivid and fiery shade:

99 Red Balloons

We'll start with an obvious one from the 80s...

Red

A few solo female artists have tackled this fiery colour in their songs, and Sara Bareilles is no exception.

The Red Shoes

Kate Bush's take on the classic fairy tale sees Miranda Richardson tricking Kate into wearing the eponymous footwear!

Mars (The Red Planet)

Gustav Holst's Planets Suite is one of our Comms Officer, Beka's favourite classical collections. In Mars, Holst evokes the maniacal menace of the god of war.

Red Letter Day

A less well known track, but easily as bright and bold as any of their more famous back catalogue... from the one and only Pet Shop Boys

BONUS TRACK
'Red' Garland

Jazz pianist, Red Garland, treats us to his skills on the black and whites with his melodious song, 'But Not For Me'
