Sing Up wins prestigious award for
Outstanding Contribution to British Music – January 2011

The National Singing Programme
has been awarded the highly regarded 2011 Making Music Sir Charles Groves Prize
for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
Established in 1990, the Sir Charles Groves Prize recognises the outstanding contribution that individuals
and organisations make to British music. Previous
recipients of the Prize include Howard Goodall,
Glastonbury Festival and Classic FM. It is awarded by Making
Music, the National Federation of Music Societies, one of the largest arts
umbrella organisations for amateur music making in
the UK.
Sing Up launched in November 2007 following a
commitment by Government to raise the standard of music education for children.
The overall aim of the programme is to increase
opportunities for primary school-aged children throughout England to enjoy
singing as part of their everyday lives. The comprehensive programme
includes a workforce development strand for teachers, Funded Programmes, an Awards scheme and an accessible online
singing resource and magazine. Currently, over 94% of state primary schools in
England are signed up to the programme.
The programme was initially championed by the composer and broadcaster Howard Goodall who is the National Singing Ambassador and was
recently honoured with a CBE! It is a
collaboration of a consortium led by Youth Music with advertising agency
AMV-BBDO, music publishers Faber Music and The Sage Gateshead.
Youth Music Chief Exec, Christina Coker OBE,
commented:
“I’m absolutely thrilled that Sing Up has been recognised
for the transformative impact it has had on primary music education. In the
relatively short time since its launch, we’ve helped to enable the power of
singing to transform schools and communities and created a world-class programme of which we are all immensely proud to be a part.
This Prize also recognises the extraordinary
enthusiasm and commitment of staff and partners across the country.”
Anthony Sargent, General Director at The Sage Gateshead, said:
“Sing Up has been an extraordinarily transformational programme
in so many ways; in the 94% of all English primary schools it’s so far reached,
in the self confidence of innumerable primary teachers and as a vivid
trail-blazer for a completely new kind of relationship between the worlds of
education and the arts. We’ve been enormously proud and happy to have been
part of the consortium team leading Sing Up, and we’ll be reflecting the many
lessons we’ve derived from the programme in many
different aspects of our future work.”

Before Christmas 2009, BBC Radio
4’s Today guest editor Robert Wyatt asked people who sang in amateur choirs around
the UK to send the sound of their song to the Today programme.
The producers were inundated in music - from requiems to carols and folk songs.
From Mousehole to Aberdeen you can hear the sound of
Great Britain's choirs by clicking the icons on the interactive map athttp://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8436000/8436192.stm.
The map is a work in progress, and they will endeavour
to add as many of the choirs we received as possible in the coming days.
Submissions are now closed.
Professor Stephen Clift, director of the Sidney De Haan
Research Centre for Arts and Health, Canterbury Christ Church University,
appeared on the Today programme on the13 January
2010 discussing what makes choral singing so popular and some of the health
benefits.
You can listen again by going tohttp://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_8455000/8455784.stm

Sing Up Announces Launch of New Training
Programme
Sing
Up have announced the launch of a new range of
diverse, practical one-day workshops available throughout the next academic
year. These workshops are for everyone, from teachers who have never sung a
note to those looking for fresh ideas.
Led by some of the
nation's best singing leaders, the Sing Up Training Programme
will enable teachers to refresh and bring their teaching to life, providing
them with skills that can be applied to teaching all subjects.
This
top quality training covers particular subjects (e.g. vocal health,
transitions, choirs and singing in the primary curriculum) suitable for all
levels of experience. Each training day will run between 10 am and 4 pm with
lunch and will take place in venues across the 9 regions of England.
The
first wave of dates have been made available for
booking with many more being added all the time.
Bookings can be
made by visiting the skills and training section of the Sing Up website (www.singup.org)
or by calling us on 01634 729883.
