Listen of the Month #40
Our Listen… is a double of a different kind this month, folks.
As Strictly Come Dancing is looming once again, and a summer Spanish holiday is still very much on everybody’s mind (and because we missed a month again!), our Listen this month is a dedication to the Paso Doble, or ‘Double Step’ in Spanish; a traditional dance likely originating in Spain as early as the 16th century. The music that accompanies the dance is played as a bullfighter would enter a bullring (Paseo), and so the dance has developed over the centuries with this in mind.
Firstly, we bring you España Cañí by Pascual Marquina Narro, a very famous piece now used for much Paso Doble ballroom dancing (and arguably one of the most famous pieces of Spanish music)…
…and we end with Los Toreadors from Carmen (as danced to by Susanna Reid and her Strictly partner back in 2013). Enjoy!
