Yorkshire Youth & Music

Our 2005 project in Doncaster Schools, was designed to show both primary teachers and children a whole range of wonderful music which can be done in the classroom.

Six schools took part, each learning a different style of traditional music over an 8 week period. At the final performance at Don Valley High School on 25 November 2005, 150 children performed West African, South African, Eastern European, English, classical Indian and South American music for each other; they had learned dances, made their own costumes, and learned about different religions and cultures, as well as learning to sing and play music from around the world.

At the final performance it was rewarding to watch the concentration and focus of children as they listened to and watched performances by other schools.

"The quality of the singing was amazing and the children were so committed to their performances!"

Primary school teacher

"I like the project because I have been able to learn about other cultures and how other religions work. Also because it has developed my pitch when I am singing it is fun and very exciting."
